Fall in the Hudson Valley is one of my favorite times of year to photograph. If you’re searching for the best places for fall photos in the Hudson Valley, there are so many beautiful options depending on the look and feel you want for your session. From colorful mountain views and open fields to historic estates and Hudson River scenery, fall gives us some of the prettiest backdrops of the entire year.
As a Hudson Valley photographer, I’ve photographed sessions at locations all over the area, and there are a few places I come back to again and again. Whether you’re planning engagement photos, a maternity session, family photos, or a couples session, these are some of the best places for fall photos in the Hudson Valley.
1. Lake Minnewaska
If you want your photos to really feel like the Hudson Valley, Lake Minnewaska is hard to beat.
Located within Minnewaska State Park Preserve, this spot has a little bit of everything: dramatic cliffs, lake views, wooded trails, mountain scenery, and gorgeous foliage once fall arrives. There are so many different backdrops within a relatively small area, which gives a gallery plenty of variety without needing to travel between locations.
Minnewaska is especially beautiful for engagement and couples sessions. I love photographing here closer to golden hour when the light becomes softer and everything starts to feel a little more romantic.

2. Drayton Grant Park at Burger Hill
Burger Hill in Rhinebeck is one of my favorite locations when someone wants something simple, natural, and a little dreamy.
The open fields and tall grasses photograph beautifully, and once you reach the top, you’re rewarded with incredible views of the Catskills. During the fall, the landscape takes on warmer golden tones that work so well with my candid, documentary style of photography.
Because there isn’t a lot competing for attention in the background, this is also a great place to focus on movement and connection: walking through the field, running around with your kids, cuddling up together, or just letting the session unfold naturally.

3. Vanderbilt Mansion
Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park gives you two completely different looks in one location.
There’s the beautiful historic architecture and gardens around the mansion, but there are also huge trees, open grassy areas, stone details, and views overlooking the Hudson River.
In the fall, the grounds become especially beautiful as the trees begin changing color. It’s a great option if you love photographs that feel a little more elevated and editorial while still having plenty of room for candid moments.

4. Franklin D. Roosevelt Historic Site
Right near Vanderbilt Mansion, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Historic Site in Hyde Park is another beautiful option for fall photos.
The property has tree-lined areas, open lawns, historic architecture, and plenty of quieter little corners to explore. During peak foliage, all of those mature trees make the grounds especially pretty.
I love this location for clients who want that classic Hudson Valley feeling without necessarily wanting a dramatic mountain backdrop.

5. Rockefeller State Park Preserve
Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pleasantville is a beautiful option for fall photos if you love a more natural, romantic setting. With wooded trails, open meadows, stone bridges, and peaceful scenery throughout the preserve, there are plenty of different backdrops to work with during a session.
In the fall, the changing leaves and tree-lined paths make the preserve especially beautiful for photos. I love locations like this because they give us plenty of space to walk around, create movement, and capture those candid moments in between the more traditional portraits.
It’s a great choice if you want your photos to feel relaxed and outdoorsy while still having that classic Hudson Valley fall look.

6. Long Dock Park in Beacon
For something a little different, Long Dock Park gives you beautiful Hudson River views while still being conveniently located in Beacon.
The waterfront, surrounding mountains, grasses, trails, and changing leaves create a more relaxed setting than some of the grand historic properties on this list. It’s especially pretty as the sun starts getting lower and reflects across the river.
Another bonus is being so close to downtown Beacon. For couples, we can potentially incorporate a little bit of that downtown atmosphere into the session as well for even more variety.

7. Your Own Meaningful Location
Sometimes the best location isn’t the most famous one.
Your favorite hiking trail, your family property, the place you had your first date, a quiet field near home, or even your own backyard can make photographs feel much more personal.
I always encourage my clients to tell me if there’s somewhere meaningful to them. Beautiful scenery is wonderful, but ultimately your photos should feel like you.
And luckily, during fall in the Hudson Valley, even the simplest locations can turn into something pretty magical.
Planning Your Hudson Valley Fall Photos
Fall color can vary from year to year depending on weather and temperatures, but generally, the Hudson Valley starts seeing noticeable color in late September with some of the most beautiful foliage appearing throughout October.
Higher-elevation areas, including places around Minnewaska, may begin changing earlier than locations farther south or closer to the river.
If having peak foliage is really important to you, I recommend keeping your session date somewhat flexible when possible. But don’t worry too much about hitting one exact weekend. Early fall greens, golden leaves, and the deeper colors toward the end of the season can all photograph beautifully.
What Time of Day Is Best for Fall Photos?
Whenever possible, I love scheduling outdoor sessions around golden hour, usually within the last couple of hours before sunset.
The lower sun creates softer light, warmer skin tones, and that dreamy glow that works especially well with fall colors.
Some locations have their own lighting quirks because of mountains, trees, or where the sun disappears behind the landscape, so I help my clients choose a session time based on both the location and time of year.

Fall is also one of the busiest seasons for photographers in the Hudson Valley, especially during October weekends. If you’re hoping for a specific date or want your session during peak foliage, I recommend reaching out early.
